Tena koutou,

Now that Cyclone Pam has passed without any major damage to our whanau hapu, many are asking how they can best koha to the relief and recovery of Vanuatu after it got smashed by Pam. So we've put together this panui based on the US Centre for International Disaster's "Guidelines for Giving." We hope it will help whanau hapu choose the option that suits you best to share your awhina.

1. CASH DONATIONS: The easiest way to koha is to give cash via one of the professional relief agencies. Cash lets those agencies buy exactly what is most urgently needed by survivors, when it is needed. It also lets relief supplies be purchased near the disaster site, avoiding the delays and huge costs that can encumber material donations. Cash donations can also support local merchants and local economies, ensure that commodities are fresh and familiar to survivors, that supplies arrive quickly and that they are culturally, nutritionally and environmentally appropriate. NO DONATION IS TOO SMALL.

2. IN-KIND & MATERIAL DONATIONS: Before collecting goods, wait to hear from the professional aid agencies in Vanuatu regards what is needed. And check the transportation, storage and distribution costs involved as well as the real-time needs of those in the affected area. Also be aware that shipments of material donations need someone in Vanuatu who is willing to receive, sort and distribute it. CASH DONATIONS ARE THE BEST WAY TO GIVE.

3. LABOUR AND TIME DONATIONS: If you're fluent in the language of the disaster-affected area, have prior relief experience and expertise in technical fields - such as medicine, communications, logistics, water/sanitation and engineering - and are willing and able to work on the ground in Vanuatu, then let one of the aid agencies know you want to volunteer your time and labour. But don't be offended if you find they already have enough skills in-country. You can still help by raising funds and raising awareness in your whanau hapu of organizations that support trained personnel on the ground.

4. HOW / WHERE TO GIVE: Click on any of the links below to donate to one of the main aid agencies who are already working in Vanuatu. Let us know if there are other agencies as well.
