E tino haruru ana te whenua i te hinganga o te totara nui i te wao-nui-a-Tane.
Kua tūkoki te waka, kua pakaru te tākere, kua riro te tītītai, te tūruki, kua mōnonehu te iwi.
It is with a sense of shock that we have received the news that Dr Bruce Gregory (Ngati Te Ao, Te Uri o Hina me Tahaawai - Te Rarawa) passed away this morning. Although he had reached a goodly age, Bruce has been a steady presence in our lives and will be greatly missed.
He Whakaputanga (which can be translated as ‘an emergence’) was signed on 28 October 1835 by 34 rangatira. Over the next three and a half years, a further 18 rangatira – from the north and further afield – were to add their moko, signatures, and marks. In the text, the rangatira asserted their tino rangatiratanga over the parts of New Zealand north of Hauraki (the mouth of the River Thames). Chris Finlayson, Minister of Treaty Settlements, and a group of Ngati Kahu dissidents who want to accept the Crown's settlement offer, are pushing for the removal of Te Runanga-a-Iwi o Ngati Kahu's mandate to conduct the claims of Ngati Kahu.
This is because the Runanga have persisted and are succeeding in doing what those who mandated them have instructed, which is:
1. Reject the Crown's settlement offer as full and final.
2. Pursue binding recommendations from the Waitangi Tribunal
3. Maintain and uphold hapu rangatiranga and mana whenua
