Yesterday, in a ceremony that blended the indigenous and Christian beliefs of Ngati Kahu and Ngapuhi, spiritual leaders from the hapu on both sides of the Mangamuka Gorge (which has been closed since July 18th as the result of multiple slips) stabilised the mauri of the maunga with karakia and waerea, rendering it safe for Waka Kotahi contractors and workers before they commence the work of repairing and reopening SH1.
